The IP protection level is an essential reference standard for purchasing engineers when bidding for the selection of transformers. It is used to define the protection ability of the equipment shell to block dust, moisture, rain and foreign objects from invading the internal devices. Improper selection of the protection level can easily cause moisture in the windings and short circuit of the equipment, which greatly shortens the service life of the transformer. In power grids, industrial and mining, and new energy projects, IP00, IP54, and IP65 are the three most commonly used protection levels for oil-immersed and dry transformers.

The IP rating consists of two digits: the first digit represents the dustproof ability, and the second digit represents the waterproof performance. The basic grade IP00 belongs to an open structure, without any shell protection, is not dustproof or waterproof at all, and can only be placed in a closed, constant temperature and dry dedicated indoor power distribution room. Due to the lack of shelter from the shell, the IP00 transformer must be placed in an independent substation cabinet, and it must not be used in outdoor environments, humid factories, and dusty workshops.

 
IP 54

IP54 is the mainstream configuration of most conventional outdoor oil-immersed transformers. The first digit 5: It can block most of the dust intrusion, and a small amount of dust will not affect the normal operation of the equipment; the second digit 4: It is splash-proof in all directions and can resist rain splashing in all directions. With corrugated sealed fuel tanks, casing rain caps and other structures, IP54 transformers can operate stably in ordinary outdoor substations, rural power grids, industrial parks and photovoltaic booster stations. This level takes into account production costs and environmental adaptability, and is the preferred solution for general power projects at home and abroad.

 
IP 65

Facing harsh working conditions such as coastal salt spray areas, chemical plants, open-pit mining areas, and rainy tropics, IP65 is the best choice. The number 6 means that it is completely dustproof, and fine dust cannot enter the interior of the equipment; the number 5 can resist the jet of low-pressure water column in any direction. The whole machine has a fully sealed structure, which can effectively resist salt spray corrosion and heavy rain penetration. Although the manufacturing cost is higher than IP54, the frequency of late maintenance and the probability of failure have decreased significantly, which is very suitable for coastal Southeast Asia, rainy areas, and Central Asian sites with slight corrosion.

 

Summary of the selection points: IP00 is only for use in clean and confined indoor spaces; IP54 is the most cost-effective and suitable for conventional outdoor scenes; IP65 is designed for harsh environments with high humidity, salt spray, dust and rain. When choosing the protection level of transformers, everyone must take into account the climate and placement conditions of the project location to ensure the long-term safe operation of power equipment.
