As a professional manufacturer dedicated to global power transformer solutions, Kechang Electric clearly interprets the EU Ecodesign Tier 2 standard, the core mandatory energy efficiency regulation for power transformers circulating and operating in the European market. Officially enforced on July 1, 2021, the standard is based on EU Regulation 548/2014 and the revised Regulation 2019/1783. It upgrades and replaces the old Tier 1 specification with stricter energy loss limits, aiming to reduce grid power consumption, lower industrial carbon emissions, and optimize the full lifecycle cost of power equipment for European end users.
This regulation governs all 50Hz power transformers with a rated capacity of 1kVA and above, including liquid-immersed and dry-type transformers widely developed and supplied by Kechang Electric. It covers small, medium and large transformers applied in power grid transmission, industrial parks and commercial buildings, applicable to all EU member states, Norway, Iceland and other affiliated regions. It is worth noting that on-site core refurbishment and winding replacement of in-service transformers also require full compliance with Tier 2 specifications, which Kechang Electric strictly implements in all EU renovation and replacement projects.
The core compliance indicators of Ecodesign Tier 2 focus on controlling no-load loss (P₀) and load loss (Pₖ). Compared with Tier 1, the updated standard significantly lowers the maximum allowable loss values for all power grades. No-load loss refers to long-term core iron loss, the main cause of daily energy waste for distribution transformers, while load loss stands for winding copper loss under rated operation. For medium-power transformers, the Peak Efficiency Index (PEI) is also adopted as an effective compliance verification basis. Kechang Electric strictly calibrates these two core loss indicators in product design and testing to fully meet EU standard requirements.
To meet Tier 2 ultra-low loss requirements, Kechang Electric has upgraded its independent manufacturing system comprehensively. We adopt high-performance low-loss silicon steel sheets, optimized core lamination processes and enlarged cross-section winding structures to reduce equipment energy consumption effectively. Although the initial equipment investment is slightly higher, our Tier 2-compliant transformers deliver outstanding long-term energy-saving benefits. Throughout the 25-30-year equipment service life, they can greatly reduce customers' grid operating costs and create reliable economic and environmental value for European projects.
As an experienced exporter serving the European market, Kechang Electric fully recognizes that Tier 2 compliance is an essential threshold for accessing EU markets. All our newly produced transformers for EU export undergo professional loss testing and complete standardized technical filing, with clear disclosure of loss parameters and compliance qualifications on product datasheets and bidding documents. In line with EU policy rules, pre-2021 stocked equipment is allowed for normal sales, while all our new products fully comply with Tier 2 standards to eliminate customs detention and on-site acceptance risks for customers.
In summary, EU Ecodesign Tier 2 has become the universal high-efficiency benchmark for European transformer applications. Kechang Electric always adheres to strict EU compliance standards in product R&D, design and production. With mature Tier 2-compliant manufacturing capabilities, we help global customers successfully develop EU projects, ensure product full qualification, avoid trade risks, and provide high-efficiency, low-carbon and reliable power transformer solutions for European power systems.
