In recent years, as many African countries have continued to invest in power infrastructure, industrial parks, mining projects, and commercial buildings, the demand for electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, ring network cabinets, and box-type substations has also been increasing.
However, compared with other markets, the use environment in some parts of Africa is more complex.Factors such as high temperature, dust, humidity, coastal salt spray, and power grid voltage fluctuations will all affect the operating stability of electrical equipment.Therefore, choosing the right equipment in the early stage of the project is often more important than frequent maintenance in the later stage.
1. The high temperature environment has a significant impact on the equipment
In some African countries, especially in tropical and desert climates, outdoor temperatures can reach above 40℃ for a long time. When the equipment is running in a high temperature environment, it is more prone to problems such as excessive temperature rise and accelerated insulation aging.
For transformers, if the heat dissipation performance is insufficient, the service life may be affected after long-term operation. Therefore, many customers will give priority to products with low loss and more stable heat dissipation performance in projects in high-temperature areas.
Oil-immersed transformers need to pay attention to the cooling effect and the quality of the insulating oil, while dry transformers, if installed indoors, also need to consider the ventilation conditions in advance to avoid overheating when the equipment is running at full load for a long time.

2. Dust protection can also not be ignored
In some inland areas and mining projects, there is more dust in the air. After fine dust enters the interior of the equipment, it can easily affect the insulation performance, and in severe cases, it may even cause a short circuit failure.
Therefore, for switchgear, ring main unit and compact substations used outdoors, it is usually recommended to choose products with a higher level of protection. Many projects will adopt IP54 and above protection levels to reduce dust entering the interior of the equipment.
At the same time, even if the equipment has a high level of protection, regular cleaning and inspection in the later stage are still very necessary, especially in dry and sandy areas.
3. Coastal areas need to pay more attention to anti-corrosion capabilities

For projects close to the sea, salt spray corrosion is also one of the important factors affecting the life of equipment. In an air environment with high humidity and high salt content for a long time, the metal structure, electrical connection parts, and the surface of the box are more likely to be corroded.
Therefore, in coastal projects, customers usually pay more attention to:
* Anti-corrosion spraying process of box body
* Galvanized steel structure
* Stainless steel parts
* Moisture-proof insulation material
Especially outdoor compact substations and switchgear need to have strong long-term anticorrosive capabilities.
4. The stability of the power grid also needs to be considered in advance
In some areas, it is not uncommon for the power grid to fluctuate or the load to change greatly.If the equipment selection is unreasonable, it is prone to failure or stability degradation during later operation.
Before purchasing transformers and switchgear, it is recommended to confirm the actual local operating voltage, load conditions, and later expansion requirements in advance.Properly reserved design margin can usually improve the stability of the long-term operation of the equipment.
5. Equipment configuration should be different in different regions
The environment of different countries and regions in Africa is very different, so there is no completely unified configuration plan. For example, coastal areas will pay more attention to corrosion resistance, while inland high-temperature areas will pay more attention to heat dissipation and dust resistance. Compared with simply focusing on price, more and more customers are now paying attention to the stability of equipment in the later stage of operation and maintenance costs.
Selecting suitable electrical equipment according to the actual project environment can not only reduce the late failure rate, but also help to improve the long-term operating reliability of the entire power distribution system.
For power projects in high-temperature areas of Africa, stability, environmental adaptability, and long-term operating performance are often more important than simple low prices.
