Frequent power outages in many countries in Africa are often not caused by insufficient power generation capacity, but by old substations and aging power distribution equipment. A large number of substations built in the early years had low design loads, making it difficult to match the current rapid urbanization, industrial development, and the pressure on the power grid brought about by the large number of new photovoltaic and wind power grid connections.
High temperature, sand and dust, and high humidity are typical environments in most parts of Africa, which will accelerate the aging of transformers, switchgear, and protection devices. Once the equipment is overloaded or the insulation fails, local failures can easily spread, causing chain power outages, and the electricity consumption of factories, commercial areas and residents will be affected. A large number of old substations lack redundant capacity and modern protection systems, with long troubleshooting and recovery cycles and huge economic losses.
The substation upgrade mainly includes three floor-to-ceiling transformations: replacement of overload transformers, renewal of high and low voltage switchgear, and optimization of protection and monitoring systems. After the transformation, the voltage can be stabilized, the technical loss of the power grid can be reduced, and the failures can be limited to local areas. At the same time, it supports the safe grid connection of large-scale new energy sources, which is also the basis for the rapid landing of photovoltaic projects in Africa. If the substation is not upgraded, it will be difficult for the newly built solar power station to stably deliver electricity to the outside world.

For EPC
For EPC engineers and local power companies, substation modernization is not an optional maintenance project, but directly reduces the length of power outages and reduces the economic losses caused by power instability. A number of projects being implemented in Ghana, Uganda, and South Africa have verified that replacing old transformers and upgrading switchgear can effectively reduce the frequency of power outages and improve the risk resistance of the power grid.
Kechang Electric can provide transformers and complete substation solutions adapted to harsh working conditions in Africa. The products follow IEC standards and are designed for high temperature and dusty environments to help overseas EPC partners land African substation upgrade projects to ensure long-term stable power supply.
