Vigilance: common pitfalls in electrical equipment procurement and quality risks of low-cost equipment

In the field of industrial electrical, we always uphold a strict principle: "The lowest quotation is often the most costly mistake." For decades, we have been committed to the manufacture and service of power systems, and we have witnessed countless customers pay a painful price for cheap equipment. Let's analyze the technical truth behind those ridiculously low quotes.

1

"Copper-clad aluminum" scam

This is the most common way to cut corners.

The industry standard (GB/T 5585.1) stipulates that the busbar must use high-purity electrolytic copper. However, many low-cost suppliers use "copper-clad aluminum" (CCA) instead. Why does this have serious consequences? The resistivity of aluminum is about 1.6 times that of copper. Under load, it will generate too much heat. Within a few months, the copper-aluminum interface will oxidize, the connection will loose, and the busbar will melt. This will directly lead to disastrous fire hazards.

In addition, these cheap equipment usually uses recycled plastic as insulation material. They cannot pass the basic power frequency withstand voltage test (2500V/min). Once they encounter voltage surges or humid environments, they will fail. The safety of operators will face serious threats.

False data and missing support

Low prices are almost always accompanied by fraudulent propaganda.

For example, a certain project requires a protection level of IP65. The cheap shell may be sealed with inferior glue. These rubber gaskets will crack within six months, causing water to enter and short circuit. Similarly, the bill of materials (BOM) may list "Schneider" or "ABB", but the actual delivery is an unauthenticated OEM product. Genuine plastic case circuit breaker (MCCB) can handle faults of 35kA; counterfeit products may explode at 15kA. The protection function does not work at all.

To make matters worse, these suppliers will disappear after delivery. Equipment malfunctioned, telephone lines were interrupted, and spare parts were nowhere to be found. One hour of production downtime will instantly offset all the costs saved by the initial purchase.
